Converting men & women shoe size chart: 7.5, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, UK, US, EU

Shoe sizes are defined differently across the globe. Some regions work with the US system, while other regions are on the UK ones. They are technically the same whether measured in centimeters or inches. The differences lie in what they measure and the unit they use. Some systems also differ in where you position the size zero or one.

Some systems indicate the shoe’s width in a number. Commonly it’s done in one to three letters. Certain regions work with different standards for different types, such as women’s and men’s. Some regions also have a specific system for children’s shoes. Depending on the manufacturer, they are not standard across several brands. For example, a person who wears a US 8 in Adidas maybe a 9 in Nike.

Read through the following sections if you want to know more about this topic. A shoe size conversion chart below should serve as a guide for you. It should be helpful when converting across different countries.

History

When determining which one you are, various regions worldwide follow different standards. We think it would be beneficial to discuss its history to know its origins.

Shoemakers worked with the barleycorn system during Roman civilization, a former English length unit equal to 0.33 inches. Roman shoemakers went for the barleycorn system to measure foot length in making sandals. In the present time, three barleycorns are equal to an inch.

During King Edward of England, barleycorn was recognized as the measurement unit. A royal decree was signed and put into order in 1324, making barleycorn the official unit of measurement. Since then, the derivation of shoe sizes in England came from barleycorn lengths.

The size of 39 barleycorns is equivalent to the size 13, which is the average for the English. An infants’ size is a different story. It starts at zero and is usually 1 to 13 barleycorns in length. Presently, Ireland and the United Kingdom are still on the barleycorn system as their standard.

Moving on to the United States, the same barleycorn measurement concept applies. However, there is a slight difference from the traditional English system. Instead of starting the measurement from zero, the US measurement system starts at one. For example, a UK 12 size is equivalent to a US 13.

Differences: Men vs. Women

The size is technically a person’s foot length. You can define it by getting the distance between a person’s most prominent part of the heel and the longest toe. The subject should be barefoot and in a standing position to measure accurately. Distributing the body’s weight equally between both feet helps get an accurate measurement.

Most of the time, the right and left feet are different in length. When purchasing shoes in-store, it is important for the wearer to try on both shoes. When shopping online, always measure both feet and reference the larger measurement.

Extension cords come in different lengths. You can look into our article about the best extension cords by length should you wish to know more.

Three Characteristic Lengths

When measuring, manufacturers often reference three characteristic lengths.

The first characteristic a manufacturer considers is the median length of the feet. Manufacturers need to test every model they release to see which recommended range. They need to ensure that the shoe will fit a given foot length. However, manufacturers do not often consider this characteristic because it takes too much time and resources. On the other hand, customers have the advantage because these measurements are directly related to one’s body.

The length of the inner cavity is the second characteristic of length. You can easily measure this length with a finished product. The catch is that manufacturers have different tolerances. Measuring it yourself would be the best way to go.

The third characteristic is the last’s length. The last is a foot-like object on the manufacturer bases the shoe models. It is usually the easiest to refer to because you will only refer to the tool used to manufacture the model. However, it does not consider which size is suitable or any manufacturing tolerances.

Lengths

fancy shoes

Across the many sizing systems globally, they differ in the units they use. As a result, they differ in increments between sizes. Shoes for the youth are smaller than the ones for adults.

Presently, normal systems are on the following units of measurement.

Barleycorn

As discussed in an earlier section, the barleycorn is an English unit that measures 0.33 inches. Presently, North American and UK shoes are on the barleycorn system.

Paris Point

The Paris point equals 0.66 cm or 6.67 mm. It’s the equivalent of 0.26 inches. A whole size increment by 1 Paris point translates to 0.131 inches or 3.33 mm between half numbers. Currently, Continental Europe is on the Paris point method. It excludes former USSR countries and Russia.

Metric

The metric system measures in millimeters. It has intervals of 5 mm. We have a chart that converts SAE to metric about the metric system.

Widths

A few systems include the width of the foot. Mondopoint uses the foot’s width in millimeters. Some make use of letters or a combination of letters to express width. The following are examples, starting from the narrowest to the widest.

  • 4A, 3A, 2A, A, B, C, D, E, 2E, 3E, 4E, 5E, 6E – Variant North American
  • A, B, C, D, E, EE, EEE, EEEE, F, G – Typical North American
  • C, D, E, F, G, H – Typical United Kingdom

Some manufacturers express width more generically. They express it as N (narrow). ‘M’ means medium. ‘R’ means regular, and ‘W’ means wide.

Men vs. Women

woman on a bench

There is a difference of two numbers between men’s and women’s sizes in most cases. Women’s shoes are two numbers smaller for the same fit length. To illustrate, a men’s US 12 is a women’s 10.

In terms of width, women’s feet are more narrow than men’s feet. However, it is not safe to generalize this notion across all brands in the market. Some manufacturers have their systems. A men’s US 9 from manufacturer X could be smaller from manufacturer Y. So, what might be the best thing to do? Aside from knowing the various systems, it is a great idea to know your metric system in millimeters or centimeters. Most of the time, the metric system is much more accurate than any other option. We only see the manufacturer not having the equivalent metric system for their footwear.

Reading the conversion chart is quite straightforward. A men’s US 6.5 converts to a women’s 7.5. A women’s US 4.5 converts to a men’s 6.5.

The EU and UK size charts are different for men’s and women’s US shoes. For example, a women’s US 5.5 converts to EU 36 and UK 3.5. A men’s US 7.5 converts to EU 41 and UK 6.5. If you don’t completely understand it, here is another example. A men’s US 10.5 converts to a women’s 8.5.

three pairs of shoes

Let’s say you are in a store in Europe and looking for a pair that fit a women’s US 8.5. When looking at the chart, the equivalent is EU 39. Depending on the design, you may go up one and use an EU 40.

Differences between different systems

There are no major differences among the countries’ systems outside of how they are expressed. UK ones are measured in barleycorns, discussed in one of the above sections. The US system is very similar to the UK ones, but start counting at one instead of zero. Lastly, EU ones are on the Paris points system. It comes from the length.

Measuring in the metric system should clear out any confusion for most people. Let’s say your feet are 28 cm in metric. You will only have to look at the manufacturer’s sizing chart and check the corresponding country sizes.

If you noticed, not all charts you see are the same. Under Armour’s table could be different from Nike’s. The tables on the internet might also differ, which leads to more confusion. The following factors contribute to these variances:

  • The system is not standardized. You will often see differences between manufacturers. It’s because of differences in manufacturing processes and the method of measuring. There are differences in the allowance and several other factors.
  • Different widths could impact the choice you make. You may need a longer one to accommodate your feet’ width for people with wide feet.
  • Children’s tables could take future growth into account.
  • Any indication of measurement in the metric system pertains to the length of the inner cavity.

The best way is to try it on to see if it fits well. If you are into in-store shopping, this should not be an issue. Most stores offer a free return or free exchange policy when shopping online. You can change the size if needed.

FAQ

Are UK shoe sizes the same as Australian?

The shoe sizes in the UK are the same measure as those used in Australia.

What is my US shoe size?

You can find out your US shoe size by using a conversion chart. If you know the size of your feet in inches or any other size measure, you can easily trace the size from the table. For example, a 9.75 inches foot size translates to 7.5 US size.

What’s a size 37 in women’s shoes?

A European 37 in women’s shoes is the equivalent of 9.125 inches. It also translates to US size 6.5 and UK size 4.5.

What is a shoe size 39 for ladies?

A European 39 in women’s shoes is the equivalent of 9.75 inches. It also translates to US size 8.5 and UK size 6.5.

Is a US shoe size the same as Australian?

The US shoe size is one number ahead of the Australian shoe size. So if you’re an eight by Australian size guide, you’re automatically a nine by US shoe size.

Here is a set of steps you need to follow to measure your exact shoe size:

How do I know my shoe size?

  1. Trace the outline of your foot onto a piece of paper.

Place a blank sheet of paper on a leveled ground and trace your foot using a fine tip marker. It’s recommended that you ask someone else to trace the outline. This way, you can ensure the weight is evenly distributed so the measurement will be accurate.

  2. Measure the length and width.

Using a measuring tape, measure the outline from the base of the heel to the longest toe. Additionally, measure the width at the widest part of the outline.

  3. Use a conversion chart.

Once you have the measurements down, use a chart to find the closest match. If you’re unable to find the exact figure and are shifting between options, choosing the bigger size is ideal.
